Personal service.
Atiilu was founded by John Matthews, a respected Iqaluit realtor and property manager who also served the community as mayor. John built the business through local knowledge, trusted relationships and a longstanding commitment to the people he represented.
Gabriel came to know John through many years of working with him at CIBC, and their professional relationship grew into one of mutual trust and respect. In 2022, Gabriel acquired Atiilu through an asset purchase and took responsibility for carrying that respected local foundation into its next chapter.
Before taking ownership of Atiilu, Gabriel spent 13 years with CIBC, including serving as a Community Manager in Nunavut. His work placed him at the centre of the financial decisions that shape people’s lives and businesses—from mortgages, credit and investment planning to the practical realities of operating in the North. During his final two years with the bank, his performance ranked among CIBC’s strongest nationally.
That experience shaped the way he approaches real estate today. Gabriel understands that a purchase, sale or investment must work on paper, but he also knows that good service depends on listening carefully, explaining options honestly and remaining responsive long after the first conversation.
Under Gabriel’s ownership, Atiilu’s managed portfolio has grown from approximately 40 doors to more than 160 across multiple properties and owners, while retaining every client relationship. That growth has come through referrals, trust and a willingness to handle the details—whether Gabriel is marketing a home, advising a buyer, overseeing a portfolio or solving a difficult property-management issue.
Today, Gabriel brings financial judgement, real estate execution and a deeply rooted understanding of Nunavut together in one locally owned company. Clients receive the sophisticated systems they expect from a modern firm, with the accessibility and accountability that can only come from a genuine one-on-one relationship.
The community our family calls home.
Gabriel lives in Iqaluit with his wife, Delilah, their sons, Benjamin and Connor, and their daughter, Chloe. For Gabriel, Atiilu is more than a business serving the community—it is part of the place where his family is building its life. If you see the Ross family out and about, please say hello.
